Willow Lane Industrial Estate

Wayfinding for an ever developing industrial area

The Opportunity

The Willow Lane Business Improvement District (BID) embarked on a significant project aimed at delivering a strategic wayfinding solution that would promote walking and cycling among staff and visitors. This initiative was made possible through partial funding from Transport for London (TFL) and was driven by the Merton Council and TFL. The project presented an opportunity to complement TFL’s existing signage while adhering to best practices in wayfinding, ultimately aiming for the successful delivery of an effective solution.

The Solution

In collaboration with Willow Lane BID and all relevant stakeholders, a successful wayfinding solution was developed. To ensure that the solution addressed the unique challenges posed by the site’s piecemeal development, stakeholders’ surveys were conducted. These surveys provided valuable insights into the specific needs of the area.

Based on the extensive research conducted, the area was divided into five zones, each designated by a distinct color and letter. This zoning system was designed to make it easy for users to identify and navigate to their desired destinations within Willow Lane, whether they were arriving at or departing from the area. Additionally, the new map was crafted to enable users to access destinations beyond the Willow Lane area, enhancing its overall utility.

Complementing the map, a family of signage was designed to provide clear directions for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. These signs were strategically placed to guide users effectively throughout the BID area, enhancing the overall navigational experience.

Beyond the design phase, the project extended to the implementation stage. Willow BID entrusted the project management of implementation to our team. The process involved selecting a signage contractor for the production and installation of the signs. Thanks to careful planning and execution, this phase was completed successfully within the allotted time and budget.

To celebrate the completion of the project and generate positive visibility for Willow Lane Industrial Estate, a launch event was organized. This event garnered significant attention, drawing participation from business owners and local stakeholders. As a result, Willow BID gained valuable positive press coverage, elevating the profile of the industrial estate regionally and nationally.

The Outcome

The strategic wayfinding solution developed and implemented for Willow Lane BID has yielded positive outcomes. It has not only enhanced the ease of navigation within the area but has also actively promoted walking and cycling, aligning with the sustainability goals set by Merton Council and TFL.

The comprehensive research and thoughtful zoning system have made it considerably easier for users to find their way around Willow Lane, ensuring a positive experience for staff, visitors, and commuters. The family of signage adds to this by providing clear guidance for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The successful project management and launch event have not only achieved the project’s objectives but have also boosted the estate’s reputation and visibility. Willow Lane Industrial Estate now stands as a testament to effective wayfinding solutions that can improve both functionality and perception within a bustling business district.
