Manor Royal Business District

Wayfinding for the biggest BID in the UK

The Opportunity

In response to the growing need to promote sustainable transportation methods and improve the overall environment, the Manor Royal Business District (MRBD) embarked on a wayfinding project. The primary objective was to increase walking, cycling, and running activities within the area for both employees and visitors. This initiative was driven by the local Council and aligned with the ‘Manor Royal Master Plan,’ ‘Crawley Area Transport Package,’ and ‘West Sussex Transport Plan, 2011-2026,’ emphasizing the importance of sustainable modes of transport.

Collaborating closely with Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council, the project aimed to streamline the existing signage system while creating a more aesthetically pleasing and sustainable environment. Recognizing the need to optimize resources for an ever-reducing budget, the project set out to develop a cost-effective wayfinding strategy for the industrial estate.

The Solution

MRBD, the UK’s largest Business Improvement District (BID), houses around 500 businesses, providing employment to 36,000 individuals, including employees of renowned companies such as Virgin Atlantic HQ, Thales, and Evans Cycles. The project initiated with a comprehensive wayfinding audit, which was a vital step in understanding the current state of navigation within the industrial estate.

Stakeholder engagement played a pivotal role in this endeavor. Regular project meetings were conducted to gather diverse user experiences and insights. This collaborative approach ensured that the wayfinding strategy would cater to the needs and preferences of a wide range of users.

Following the audit and the formulation of a comprehensive wayfinding strategy, the project progressed to the detailed design phase. This phase involved the creation of a family of signs categorized into vehicular and pedestrian directions. To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the solution, prototypes were developed and tested rigorously. These prototypes were designed to meet the requirements of the strategy while remaining sustainable for years to come.

Another significant aspect of the project was the development of a versatile mapping solution. This solution was designed to be adaptable for both print and online platforms. In particular, the online component was optimized for mobile devices and offered customization options for stakeholders to adapt and utilize in their specific environments.

The Outcome

The implementation of the wayfinding strategy and signage system has yielded positive outcomes for MRBD and its stakeholders. The clutter of previous signage has been significantly reduced, contributing to a more visually appealing and organized environment. The project’s commitment to sustainability has also resulted in a more eco-friendly industrial estate.

Furthermore, the improved wayfinding system has successfully encouraged walking, cycling, and running activities, aligning with the broader goals of promoting sustainable transportation. The engagement of stakeholders in the project’s development has ensured that the solution meets the diverse needs of the business park’s users.

In conclusion, the MRBD wayfinding project stands as a testament to effective collaboration between public and private entities to enhance the navigational experience within an industrial estate. By reducing clutter, improving sustainability, and encouraging sustainable transportation, this initiative has not only streamlined wayfinding but also contributed to a more vibrant and eco-conscious business park.
