Beddington Industrial Area, Sutton

Branding & Wayfinding Strategy

The Opportunity

The Beddington Industrial Area Business Improvement District (BID) approached us with a unique opportunity to revamp wayfinding within their industrial estate. In collaboration with the local authority and The London Borough of Sutton, we were commissioned to conduct a comprehensive audit and develop a strategic wayfinding masterplan. This ambitious project aimed to enhance navigation for all users within the industrial area, including both vehicle users and pedestrians. Furthermore, the proximity of the industrial area to the charming Beddington Village necessitated consideration of the needs of local residents.

The Solution

To address the complex wayfinding challenges of the Beddington Industrial Area, a significant level of stakeholder engagement was undertaken. This included gathering insights from vehicle users, pedestrians, and residents alike. By understanding the unique needs and preferences of each group, the wayfinding strategy was tailored to create a more cohesive and user-friendly navigation experience.

As part of the strategic solution, it became evident that the estate needed a distinct sense of place to define its identity. To fulfill this requirement, we conceptualized and designed a new branding initiative for BIA, which would serve as a placemaking brand. This brand is now being applied not only to influence the signage family but also to be integrated into their new website and marketing materials, creating a unified and recognizable identity for the industrial area.

Upon securing the necessary funding, we were subsequently appointed to oversee the implementation of the devised strategy. Collaborating closely with the BID, TfL, LBS, and other relevant stakeholders, our team has taken on the role of project management to ensure the successful execution of the plan. This includes close monitoring to ensure that the project remains on schedule and within the allocated budget.

The Outcome

The comprehensive wayfinding masterplan and placemaking brand for Beddington Industrial Area have already begun to yield positive outcomes. The strategy’s development involved extensive stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the needs of all user groups, including residents, were considered.

The new placemaking brand for BIA has not only given the industrial area a clear and recognizable identity but also integrated seamlessly into their digital and promotional materials. This consistency in branding enhances the perception of the industrial estate and fosters a sense of place.

As the project progresses, with our team overseeing implementation, Beddington Industrial Area is poised to become a more navigable, organized, and welcoming environment for all who utilize it. The collaborative efforts with local authorities and stakeholders have paved the way for a successful revitalization of wayfinding and placemaking within the industrial area.

In summary, the Beddington Industrial Area wayfinding and placemaking project serves as a prime example of how thoughtful strategy development, branding, and project management can transform an industrial estate into a user-friendly, cohesive, and distinctive destination.
