An empty shopfront on a busy high street

Sutton needed new signage for a run of windows on the high street. Vacant units are a problem every town centre knows: a long stretch of empty glass drags the whole street down, and whitewashed windows announce the vacancy rather than hiding it.

The brief was to turn that frontage into something worth looking at, carrying the Support Local message and the #lovesuttonbiz campaign.

Measure first, then design

We started with a short review — brief agreed, the full run of windows measured. On a shopfront installation the measurements dictate everything, because the artwork has to work across multiple panes with mullions cutting through it. Get that wrong and a face ends up split down the middle by a window frame.

With the survey done, the studio produced a set of design options for Sutton to choose from.

A wall of the town, showing the town

The design is a photographic collage of Sutton itself. Local businesses, the football club, market stalls, community events, people at work and people at play. Each image is set in a warm yellow keyline against a dark brown ground, so the photographs pop rather than merging into one another.

Two messages carry the whole run. Support Local is set large and angled across the left-hand section, deliberately breaking the grid so it reads as a hand-placed statement rather than a corporate banner. #lovesuttonbiz anchors the opposite end with campaign and partner logos beneath it.

Type sizing was worked out for the viewing distance. From across the road you read Support Local. Walking past on the pavement, you start picking out individual photographs — and if you live locally, you recognise people and places in them. Two levels of engagement from one piece of artwork.

A frontage that adds to the street

The dark ground was chosen for a reason. It gives the images depth in daylight and stops the run from glaring in sunshine, and it sits comfortably against the grey and stone of the surrounding buildings rather than fighting them.

The result reads as intentional. Someone walking down Sutton High Street sees a display about their town, not a unit waiting for a tenant.
