It’s no surprise that technology is constantly advancing. So with the new technological advancements, it was only a matter of time before the world of navigation caught up. We’re talking about Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence. These are two new types of technology that are have begun to revolutionise the way we approach navigation and design.
So, Augmented Reality, sometimes referred to as AR, what is it? Well, it’s a new type of technology that helps developers put virtual objects in the physical world making sure every experience and journey is tailored and fit for every user. Printed maps are very generic and cater for the masses, AI & AR make sure your journey is uniquely yours.
Artificial Intelligence, also referred to as AI, has been the hot topic of conversation for the past several years and its definition is constantly being debated. To put it simply, it is a new type of machine intelligence that holds the ability to learn based on its own experiences. This process of pattern recognition is commonly categorised as ‘machine learning’.
There are a lot of different places where you can find the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality. However, here are some of the most popular places where this technology is popping up:

In terms of wayfinding, Augmented Reality aims to give its user ease of navigation as well as the ability to navigate unfamiliar places quickly. This means when a user is in an unfamiliar environment, they don’t have to stress when trying to figure out where they are going. Not only does it aid your journey directionally, but it also provides you with a wealth of rich information about the area while you are on the go. For example, as a tourist, having background information about the landmark or building you are walking past is a nice addition to the experience.
Before the introduction of these new user interfaces, there were very limited to uses for conventional signage. Where it was once used simply for directions, you can create interesting and unique experiences through navigation. For example:
The shift towards AI and AU in design is happening and to stay ahead of your competitors, you need to think about how to evolve your techniques. This means you’ll have to prepare to start moving away from the sole use of traditional signage and instead include more tech-oriented approaches. This isn’t to say you need to be a technology wizard, but you need to understand why the technology needs to work in the way it should. This will also include using systems that respond to the given environment rather than typical static signage.
