Design Trends: What to watch out for in 2020

2019 was a great year for progress and adaptation in the design world and we’re really excited to see what the design trends of 2020 will bring. While you can’t fully predict the future, we’ve got a few things that we’re pretty positive you’ll see a lot of in the next few months.

2020, new year, design trends 2020

But first, what was popular in 2019?

This time last year we made a similar article mapping out what we thought were going to be the biggest design trends of 2019. You can check that out here.

What we think will be poppin’ in 2020

2020 marks the end of the decade and we are looking forward to seeing what this new era is going to bring for the design world.

Custom Typography

As a business, it’s never been more crucial to stand out from competitors. Custom typography is definitely a great way to do this. If you have a font that is uniquely yours, this will make your company stick in the mind of your customers. Having typography created specifically for you also means that there will be no one else using it.

Bold Colours

Colour is possibly one of the easiest ways to make your company, branding or marketing stand out. As we mentioned before, it’s becoming more and more important to give yourself an edge that makes you stand out. If you want a bit more information on why colour is important in design and branding, we’ve got you covered.

Pantone has announced their colour of 2020 as ‘19-4052 Classic Blue’. So, don’t be surprised if you see this making a frequent appearance throughout the year. You can read more about that here.

Simplicity

We’re expecting 2020 to bring the old saying ‘less is more’ back to life. The past few years have been filled with packed designs and hectic colour schemes, but it seems like things are starting to trend the other way. Simple, clean-cut design is the way to go moving into the New Year.

Shiny Metals

Successful designs need to be visually pleasing AND eye-catching. Shiny metals are doing just that. Implementing shiny metal textures and looks into your designs is a great way to get the consumers attention while staying ahead of the trend.

Liquid or Fluid Shapes

In 2020, you might notice the design world moving away from the harsh lines of geometric shapes and more towards liquid/fluid shapes. These bring a bit of a 3D element into the design and add what feels like more individualisation.

Out of the Box

It’s no secret that competition between brands is getting stronger and stronger. That means that as a designer, you need to keep thinking outside of the box. While being true to your own design techniques, you need to continue to show customers that you are forward-thinking and aware of all of the different trends. It’s time to push boundaries and showcase your talent.

Overall, 2020 is due to be an exciting year for all things design. What do you think will be the biggest trends in 2020? Get in touch, we’d love to hear your opinion.
